About plaster skimming
Skimming is the most commonly requested plastering job in a residential property. It suits walls and ceilings that are structurally sound but have an uneven, damaged or dated surface — old textured coatings, tired paintwork over patchy plaster, or plasterboard that has been fixed but never finished.
The surface is prepared first: loose paint removed, suction controlled with the appropriate primer or PVA, joints scrimmed and any holes filled. Two coats of finish plaster are then applied and trowelled up through several passes as the plaster sets, which is what produces a genuinely flat surface rather than one that only looks flat until the light changes.
Freshly skimmed plaster needs time to dry before painting, and a mist coat first. Guidance on drying times for your particular room is given before the work starts.
