Plastering is one of the few trades whose work is visible in every single room of a property, every day, for years. Walls and ceilings are the largest surfaces in a home, and the standard they are finished to determines how light falls across a room, whether paint sits evenly, how crisp the corners look and how long the decoration lasts before cracks and patches start to reappear. Good plastering rarely gets noticed. Poor plastering gets noticed constantly.

That is why preparation matters as much as the plaster itself. Surfaces are checked for suction, loose or blown material is cut back, joints are scrimmed, beads and angles are set true, and the right bonding or primer is used for the background in question. Only then does plaster go on, in coats, with the trowelling passes taken at the right stages as the material sets. Rushing any of those steps produces a surface that looks acceptable on the day and disappointing under natural light a week later.

Woking is dominated by later twentieth-century estate housing and apartments built in plasterboard rather than solid wet plaster. The right specification changes accordingly — gypsum skim on sound modern backgrounds, dry lining in boarded construction, and breathable lime plaster on older solid-wall buildings where a modern impermeable finish would trap moisture and cause more damage than it solves.

Loft conversions need sloping ceilings, dormer cheeks and reveals set out accurately. Junctions between new and existing structure need detailing properly if hairline cracks are not to appear later.
